I am heading down in a couple of weeks, does any one know if I can still change the old currency at the bank for new ones, or do I have useless monopoly money.

Neither.

You cannot change old currency at a retail bank but it is also not useless.

You have to exchange the old bills for new ones at the The Central Bank of Costa Rica which is located near the main post office in San Jose.

Any update as to when (or if) they will be updating/changing the 5,000 and 10,000 colone bills?

I make sure I do not have any 5,000 and 10,000 bills remaining every time I leave, for fear of coming back and the bills have been updated like what happened 1 to 1 - 1/2 years ago with the old 1,000 and 2,000 colone bills.

Cannot remember the exact answer in terms of when, but YES there is a new 5,000 and 10,000 bill coming out in 2012. I seem to have October in my mind as to when it will be released and November for when they take the old notes officially out of circulation.

There was also an article about the brand new 20,000 note being dramatically changed as they have already been easily counterfeited. Amazingly enough the most counterfeited bill was previously the 2,000 colones note... note sure about Tico math, but if I were counterfeiting money I would go big or go home and not mess with this small stuff.

Keep an eye out for more new bills coming out in the next several months.

You big spenders will be able to splurge with the new 50,000 colones note. An alternative to paying cien!

Luckily, I've only got 7,000 of the old currency. Thanks for the info!
