No bet, as they screwed up the new 1K note and will need to keep the old one in circulation til they unfuck the situation-- viewtopic.php?f=1&t=38080

I would tread lightly before I got to excited about the alleged misprint.

No current bill, including the recently released 20 mil note, makes any mention of the "Republica de Costa Rica" on the bill rather they all are marked "Banco de Central Costa Rica". When the bills were introduced AM Costa Rica pictured them in the article. Granted they are marked specimen but they but they say the same thing as the current bill "Banco de Costa Rica" not "Republica (Estado) de Costa Rica.

Maybe I won't have to stand in line at Central Bank headquarters after all.

Look closely at the yellow seal on the 'head' side of the 1K bill. Around the top of that yellow seal, it says "Estado de Costa Rica". The one I am looking at in my hand says the same thing. The 2K or 5K note does not have any such seal.

Unfortunately I cannot look at any of the new notes as I have yet to get one.

I'd still pick up a hundred or 2--even if this proves a tempest in a teacup, you'll still have either spendable cash or an interesting souvenir, depending on whether they are recalled or not.

Got my first new bills from an ATM this morning. Had no problem folding them and putting them into my money clip along with the old paper bills.

Does anybody know if you can still exchange the old notes for the new ones at Banco Nacional downtown? Is there a deadline for this?

I exchanged mine one month ago.......no ID required, no questions asked; extremely simple process....a lone man sitting behind an isolated teller window/counter, whose only job seemed to be that of making the exchanges. I saw or heard nothing indicating a deadline.

I like the new notes.

I had numerous 1,000 bills left over from a past trip and didn't realize they had been taken out of circulation. I went to use some with the taxi that dropped me off at the Amistad and the cabbie brought me inside to have Rudy explain that I couldn't pay using these bills.

However, I went to exchange money the following day at Banco Nacional on Avenida 1 I believe and asked the teller if she could exchange the old 1,000's, she then directed to go to the bank across the street (National Banco de Costa Rica) and exchange them there. Went in and was promptly greeted and directed to the correct person to make the exchange. Pretty painless overall.
