Last December when I was there I had (and still have) my Iphone 3G with service through ATT. I used it primarily for texting and everything worked fine. I may have used it to make phone calls just once or twice and no issues there either. I am thinking of buying the new Iphone 4S but switching my carrier to Verizon and am wondering whether that would work the same when I'm back down there this December or would there be any issues since it's Verizon? Any comments appreciated. Thx.

Are you talking about using it in CR? Verizon is a CDMA carrier and WILL NOT work in CR. CR uses a GSM system. The only Verizon phone that will work in CR is a world phone, which is both CDMA and GSM. Look at it this way, if it has a SIM card, it's GSM.

Organe is correct. Verizon phones do not work in CR. Unless you are selling the Iphone with ATT keep it as your CR phone.

I have pre-ordered a 4s and will test it on December 2 in CR, although I am staying with AT&T because I kinda like pain and suffering. The 4S contains both the GSM and CDMA antennae.

The subsidized iPhone 4 S comes locked. However, Verizon has stated they will unlock the SIM after 60 days of being a customer in good standing. Sprint has stated they will unlock also. There have been reports of the iPhone 4 S from Sprint was actually arriving unlocked but Sprint but has stated they will be pushing through a lock to those phones. In either case the carrier will unlock after a short period of time. Also note, in the US you will still be "locked" to the carrier. Further note the subsidized iPhone 4 S comes with a roaming SIM installed so it will work in Costa Rica but you will be paying roaming charges.

San Te, great points.

If you are a Verizon customer, the new iPhone 4s offers both CDMA (verizon's standard US system) and GSM/HSDPA (3g) similar to ATT. If you are in the US, you will be using their CDMA network. If you travel outside the US, you can roam on GSM (very expensive) now. But, as San Te stated, after 60 days Verizon and Sprint (also cdma technology) will unlock you iphone 4s so you can insert the mini sim from ICE. Or from the two new companies coming to CR in November: Movistar and Claro.

Here's the Websites for the new mobile entrants Brother Seabreeze mentioned--they are both huge companies and while Claro is a subsidiary of a Mexican corp., it is Puerto Rico based:

As long as you have wifi on your phone you should be ok if the hotel has it in your room or lobby (assuming you have GSM). Just download skype or another application and you can avoid the expensive carrier international calls.
