inside costa rica report's today--A total of nine massage parlours were the focus of intervention by agents of the Organismo de Investigación Judicial (OIJ), with the objective of breaking up an alleged network of pimps, "proxenetas" in Spanish.

I was downtown yesterday and saw some of the action in front of Muses.

Police were busy last night, they even came into Horseshoe around 8pm and checked everybody's documents. First time I've seen them do that.

What's the over/under for how long till they are all back in business? It's mystifying why they bother, unless it's for bribes. On the other hand, I'd certainly rather roust some half naked girls than tangle with real criminals. Maybe the OIJ isn't so dumb after all.

Walked by Musas, Jet Set and Pension Flamingo today, all open for business. What a shock.

What they usually are looking for are things that are not legal such as pimping, und***ge, drugs and they usually are accompanied by immigration police looking for violators of immigration law.

Just as a side comment while it is a very fine distinction prostitution is not legal rather is is not illegal.

Interesting - now this I did not know - knew about the pimping/pandering law, und***ge, et al - but thought it was legal so long as the aformentioned were not present - thanks :)

I walked by Muses around 2:30 on Friday, 9-2 and saw two (2) cops and a news camera crew filming in front of the place.
I crossed the street to get behind the camera and just kept walking.

I knew there were MP's in the area and figured that's what was going down. Once back to my room, I looked at my CRT map and confirmed my suspicions. Just glad I was not in the place getting service when the heat arrived. For me, just another reason why I don't do MP's.

And that distinction as I understand it is this--if an activity is prohibited by law, it's illegal; if it's mentioned in the law as not prohibited, it's legal; if it's not mentioned at all, it's not illegal. These are universal definitions, not just confined to our activities or Costa Rica. I'll apologize if I'm mistaken, and return to silently looking at carousels.

Ignorance of non-existing laws is not an excuse.

You would think so. However, back on Super Bowl Sunday 2004 when the municipality of San Jose raided and closed down the sports books at the HDR and Morazan the reason reported in AM Costa Rica was that the legislation allowing casinos made no reference to sports books. That is the law neither said they were permitted or not permitted. The HDR decided to use the space for something else and never reopened the sports book but the Morazan did resume operation some time later.

Surprisingly, the sports book in the Colonial, also located in San Jose and just a few meters east of the HDR was neither raided or shutdown.
