Yeah, I went to school last century too and we had it. Preterite is just the simple past tense. In Spanish, there are two past tenses (not counting subjunctive), preterite and imprefect. The preterite form is "I drove" (one-time action). The imprefect is "I was driving" (continual action).

I have noticed that Tico sometimes use imprefect when it should be preterite. For example, "I had $5". It should be preterite "Tuve" (I had) but many use "Tenia" (I was having). I guess it's a Tico thing.
