Geez guys get a grip! It was an isolated incident no different then what happens in most cities in the world. I read the Miami Herald online every day and it is an unusual day when there is not a story about a drive by shooting usually resulting in a fatality.
 Well the obvious difference is that we can avoid bad areas with stray bullets flying around in the states but down there most all of us spend at least some time sitting inside those lobby doors.

POOSIE!!! :P  :P  Did you ever see the DEAD guy in the parking garage next to the NY Bar back in 05 that the cops took out? A few bullets add to the excitement!!!

Berk....

Except if its you that gets shot

No offense to Brother Dean's beautiful city but this kind of thing is more expected there--Memphis too. And yes Philly is way worse than either in per-capita homicides. In Costa Rica it's unexpected downtown thus more shocking. In US cities you might well have "civilians" pulling out their bidness and busting caps at the bad actors--a "pox on both their houses" scenario.

I usually don’t hang out at the DR but a friend came into town and I made the obligatory pilgrimage with him to the DR. He really was a K*D in the candy store and wanted to spend as much time there as possible.

Acting as his wing man I had some time to watch what the security guards were doing. They frequently deny admission to locals, some chicas and I saw them toss out a couple of locals who were really angry.

The damage to the building and the injury to the guard were probably lessened by the use of practice ammo instead of hollow points or some other more damaging round.

All in all, I would say the security is pretty tight in the DR.

It could have been much worse.

I WAS THERE! It was my first night in Costa Rica and Del Rey. All of a sudden I heard about 8 gun shots and everybody ducked under the tables. Girls were crying, guys were scared and it was chaos for some minutes. I thought these kind of things happened all the time but when I saw the HOTTEST bartender being carried off after almost fainting, I knew this wasn't ordinary. All the girls kept telling me this never happens. At that time I was scared but now looking back I'm actually glad I got to experience something this unusual and walk away to talk about it. After all... I still got a girl at the end of the night. I was actually ready to go back to the hotel alone thinking everyone was too distracted and worried. Obviously... I WAS WRONG! These girls don't stop even after almost getting shot and/or killed! Hilarious.

DiegoC, funny you should mention the security guards acting nasty with the locals. I had the experience once of being stopped by a security guard who thought I was a local till he realized his mistake and backed off. I have noticed them eyeing me speculatively on a couple of occassions. They must be pissing off the Ticos.

I have stood there and just people watched; not just the eye candy but the whole environment. I noticed that if you are obviously a Gringo they don’t mess with you. If you look like a Tico they will probably wand you with the magic weapon detector.

Since so many Ticos are as white as me, and I look like I drink bleach every AM, I think the cue on dress.

Nearly all of the Gringos that go in there are in their Class "A" Monger Uniform 8) ; blues jeans or shorts (Ticos almost never wear shorts in town or in public), white tennis shoes and a T-shirt which makes a statement (e.g., old guys rule), a golf shirt or an Aloha shirt (comeonIwannalayya).

As we have discussed before on other threads, Ticos wear dark pants, drab button up shirts, and dark shoes.

Of course there are exceptions; but just stand there and watch some day.

Uh, yeah, about that--I understand conservative dress (I'd call it drab but that may be cultural bias on my part) during the day but jeez-O'Murphy--when stepping out to the Pink Palace or "nightclubs", you'd think a bit more sporty attire would be appropriate. Go to that dance hall I talk about incessantly--El Tobogan. The ladies sure aren't shy about showing some finery but the Ticos? It's almost the quasi-uniform Brother DiegoC described. I'm not ranking on Ticos certainly not ones who are Brothers here but this mode of dress isn't common when Latin men go sportin' in other countries, is it? I'm excepting Latin Caribbean nations--you'd expect them to be more florid and they are, but how about the other 20 nations in Central/South America? Looking for comments here Brothers yea or nay.
