I am combining there two topics because they are on pages 2&3 of todays www.amcostarica.com I still don't understand what the new Director of immigration ig going to do about we Perpetual tourists. The letter to the editor about entering and leaving colombia is also a bit concerning.

obviously all the problems with immigration and visas and stuff will be a thing of the past now that the problem has been turned over to a woman with a background in Ch*ld development and her able deputy director the anthropologist.

Although not always checked, the yellow fever vaccination has been a requirement for some time for travelers entering CR from Colombia (and Peru, as well). It's not required for travel between Colombia and the U.S.

Get your shot at Clinica Biblica or CIMA. Make sure you let them know you need it for travel to Colombia. They will give you documentation that you need to take to the Ministerio de Salud. You will then fill out some papers with them and approximately a month later you will get the World Health Organization card that you need to travel. Stupidly, it didn't dawn on me that it would take a month for them to process something that should take five minutes. As a result, I had to reschedule my first visit to MDE. When I finally made the trip, Copa did check my documentation before letting me board. I've heard that they don't always do this even though it's required.

So the bottom line is that you should start the process a couple months before your planned travel.

Do you actually need the WHO card or could you just show a shot receipt or some form of documentation from a doctors office?

I was told that documentation from the doctor's office won't work. You need an International Certification of Vaccination. In CR this is issued by the Ministerio de Salud on behalf of the WHO. I don't know how it works if you get your vaccination in another country, but would assume it's a similar arrangement.

Also, although I'm not 100% sure on this, apparently it may not be required if you are over 60. Guess that's good new for VB and bad news for Jmacaula.

But I'd check the last statement with your airline to make sure that is correct.

Can you get the vaccine in the US, if you are going to Colombia then to CR?

Most likely you can due that for any city in the U.S. and get info on where to go for the shot.

A friend and businessman here is going to Columbia and this is how he handled it.

He went to a Fischel drugstore. Most can administer the shot, but have to order the vaccine. This one has it on hand and it cost $40. He then went to the Minsterio de Salud (directly east of the Holiday Inn) and received all of the proper documentation. Now he has the doctors, pharmacy, Salud and Who card. All in one day.

I met a couple who were basically forcibly innoculated upon coming into Costa Rica from Columbia. They were sick for a couple of weeks afterward.

Sounds like they were giving you a story. No one is inoculated when they arrive in CR from Columbia whether voluntarily or forcefully. They are sent back to there origination point. The period between inoculation and protection is 10 days so it would make little sense to inoculate a person on arrival.
