Just a thought (and it was sort of mentioned above) but WTF--bring a reasonably optioned machine down with you sort of on spec if you can afford to tie up a bit of money for a little while. Considering the cost of electronics in CR, you should be able to move it in a minute if the Chica thing falls through, even if you're selling it as used w/no warranty. Our classifieds if nothing else.

I NEVER take take 2 laptops with me and always sell one on Craig's List while I am in CR (having placed the ad on Craig's List about a month before I depart for CR). Nope. I NEVER do that.
