Hi guys I tried this today and it works. The free 411 service # is 1-800-373-3411 or 1800 free411 has a new feature you can now make free calls on this #. All you do is dial the # above and listen for the instruction. They will say residential, business a few other things and then she says free call. When you get to the pause say Free call. You then hear a sponsors message and after that you simply type in 011 506 and the # you want to call. It gives you a free 5 min. call and you can use it as often as you like. Give it a try Old Herman would not tell you wrong. I will be in CR Monday so I hope to see a few of the guys. As always Take Care and be safe Uncle H.

I can think of a few businesses in CR that might tout this instead of an 800 number (full disclosure by them that you'd be subjected to a commercial first, of course). Any legit way a business can cut expenses for themselves or their customers and give themselves a competitive edge by being savvy, is a good thing.
Thanks for the tip, Herman.

Vonage, MagicJack and other alternatives are excellent but you can't have too many arrows in the quiver.

If I'm not mistaken, this is for calling CR- Vonage and the others are great for calling the States from CR, but to do the reverse is expensive even with them, this is a great tip.

Do you have to call another Skype phone with Skype?- I don't know. This one lets you call both home and cell for free.

I’ve been using "Google Voice" to call CR and Colombia. CR

I second Google Voice. You can also use it to make calls from ANY telephone if you are in the US. Not just your phone or a computer. It had been open to new users by invitation only but I believe that it is open to all now with no invitation necessary.

I just checked for this and it's still invitation only. You can request an invite and they'll get one to you when they get around to it.

free411 worked great, Thx Herman

MagicJack will let you register any number and you don't have to be on the computer. Stateside only as far as I can tell.

CasaV asked about SKYPE !!

I use it all the time. If I call someone in the states who does not have it, it costs me 2.1 cents per minute. If the person I call has SKYPE the call is free. A friend and I talk often and have talked for over an hour a few time with no cost. Same thing if someone calls me from the states on SKYPE; it is free. I buy time $10 at a time and mi Nica amiga uses most of that calling her family in Nicaragua (about 20 cents per minute)
