I just finished reading this thread and going to the amazon site to check for unlocked phones. It looks like I can buy a cheap one for about 20 bucks.

I have 3 main questions:

How would I know my phone number?

How would the person dial my number from the US. in other words, would it be an international call from the US.

How would I make an international call from Costa Rica to the US using this unlocked phone?

Thanks,
1life2live

The SIM card comes with a phone number, they will tell you what it is. You should ask if you aren't sure. It will be 8 digits, starting with an 8.

Unlike the US, you don't get charged minutes for incoming calls in CR. If somebody wanted to call you from the US, they would dial 011-506-xxxx-xxxx. Again, you will get the number when you buy the SIM.

You would dial 001-area code-number. It can be done from the pre-paid SIM, but it will waste a lot of minutes. I don't remember exactly, but when I called once, I think it deducted about ¢150 per minute for a US call versus ¢40 for a local call. So a ¢2,500 SIM which gives you 60 local minutes, may give you about 15 minutes to the US.

If you entered 2 $20 renewal cards back to back would you then have 120 days or would the second 60-day card override the first?

so I'm flying out tomorrow (Friday jan. 22) for San Jose. Does anyone know if they have prepago SIM cards available at the moment. Seems like that sometimes they have 'em and some times they don't. I was hoping to buy one while I wait for my bags to come off of the carousel tomorrow afternoon.

I just recharged my prepaid and a couple of items:

One, you can change the 150 instructions to English. Press 4.

I messed up my recharge, so to get a block removed I dialed 150 & 5 Customer Service. She spoke English, and removed.

I renewed before my expiration date. I purchased a 10.000c/60 days. Instead of 60 days from my original expiration date, it goes from the date of renewal.

Purchasing was a snap. Pay the cashier, receive a receipt with a 14 digit PIN. Dial 150, press, 1, enter the PIN.

AT&T works fine in CR they have a roaming agreement with ICE which is currently the only cell phone provider the country.

Just make sure you have international roaming enabled call 611 and ask if you don’t know and the phone is capable of 1800mhz operation, all quad band phones and most tri band phone are fine.

The rate for international roaming in CR is 2.29 per minute for standard and 1.99 if you have the 5.99 per month world traveler plan. Rates are the same for both incoming and outgoing.

When you call a local number in CR just dial the 8 digit number. To dial the US it’s 001 area code then the number. When someone calls you in CR from the US they just dial your number same as if you where anywhere in the US.

Safe trip hope that answers your question.
