To begin with I know Sh#t about computers. Just bought an acer aspire. Nice little notebook works fine for what I want Problem is, when I try to connect to the internet via wifi, it asks me for a network key. it says it requires a wep key or a wpa key. I have no clue what they are asking for.

Can anyone explain this ?

Thanks

OK if it's your WIFI at your house when it was set up they put in a security key that is what they are asking for generally they would put your phone number to you house or some thing like that. IF it is not at your house then you need to ask the Computer Genius at you job for the Key. most place that has open WIFI you laptop will detect it and go on line with out any problem..

Hope that helps..

A secured network requires a "key" or password for access. The person who configured the network knows what the key is. If it is your network then that person is you. If the network is not yours and you do not know the password then that means that the network owner does not want you to use the network!

An unsecured or open or public network does not require a "key" for access. These networks are available for anyone and everyone to jump on for internet access.

The network setup or connection wizard in Winders shows all "available" networks. Some or all of these may require a key. Typically, unless the network is intended to be for public use, it will be secured. That is, unless the person who configured it knows nothing about networks and ignored using any security features.

Hope this helps you understand a little about what is going on...
