La Nacion today has a story about the new currency coming out in March of next year. The denominations will be 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, and 50,000. They will all be a different size to help people with vision problems know the difference. The smallest will be the 1,000 note, measuring 125 millimeters (4.9 inches) long by 67 millimeters (2.6 inches) tall. Each denomination will be 7 millimeters (.275 inch) longer than the previous one, but the same height. They will each be a different color. The rojo (1,000 colones) will still be a rojo and the 50,000 will be purple. The value will be printed larger also. The current images will be replaced by images based on the country's eco-systems. There will be increased security measures to foil counterfeiting.

Good luck trying to use the 20 000 and 50 000 notes anywhere. I hope the bank machines dont get stocked with those bills.

Damn, I really hate that different sized currency thing, even though I understand the advantages for the sight impaired.

Why do you feel that way? The larger merchants will certainly have no problem and the medium size most likely will not either. Sure the small vendor might. If you are thinking those merchants who refuse to accept US bills over a 20 will have the same policy on larger colon bills I do not agree. There concern over large US bills is one of counterfeiting.

If we've had our occasional problems with ATMs in CR, just wait until they try dispensing different sized bills.

Rather than different sized-bills, I still prefer Brother El Ciego's idea of bills having clipped corners (the smallest having all 4 corners clipped, the next smallest, 3 and so on; eliminating the 2K bill and the 1K being a coin). Different size bills only help if you have a reference to use. Thus I (we) have spoken.

Costa Rica already has 9 different coins in circulation. Bot sure adding two more is a good idea. The advantage CR coins have for those who can not see is that every coin has the denomination in braille on it.

Nobody ever consults the blind when making these decisions, or if they do the advice of the blind is wholly ignored. :( No different sizes of bills are required; a simple system of cutting corners uniformly, more cut corners meaning lower denominations, would work more easily with PBA (paper bill acceptors) in slot machines, for instance, would not require modifications to cash drawers or ATM's,, and furthermore would give no incentive to counterfeiters to "cut corners" to fake out blind guys.

Ah well, their hearts are in the right place. :)

I imagine they see more currency devaluation/inflation in the future, thus making the larger denomination bills necessary.
