Anybody know, generally speaking, how the weather is in Puerto Viejo area this time of year (mid to late May)? Thx.

i was there in may of last year - rained half the day. still had a good time.

Puerto Viejo pretty much remains hot and humid year round. The southern Caribbean gets lots of rain, but during February/March and September/October there is relatively less precipitation. When the sun is out, make sure you are in the shade between the hours of 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. The sun is intense during this time and even the locals will seek shelter from the sun. Because it is wet and damp, there are a lot of mosquitoes. The dengue-fever carrying variety comes out in the early morning and late in the the day, so take precautions with repellent and try to keep your arms and legs covered during these time periods. There is no prophylactic medicine (like mefloquine for malaria) to protect against dengue. About 2 years ago, there was an outbreak of dengue in Limon. Although malaria outbreaks seem to be rare, it probably would be wise to take mefloquine or lariam to guard against it as well.

This doesn't speak directly to Brother BT's query but an excellent source of info about PV posts frequently on TripAdvisor.com. Look up Resident Expert Colinsito's posts and shoot him an email. I have found that even though he's a business owner in PV *, he's a straight-shooter about current local conditions.
Also plucked from TA was 2 other hotels in about the same price range: Banana Azul and Cariblue Hotel--tough to go wrong with any of them.

Another choice might be Hotel Punta Cocles but their Website is down--check TA for details on this one and the others.

Probably the nicest beach town in CR in my book. Very laid back and as I recall....we swam in the ocean while getting a nice warm rain shower. The road going in....worse than terrible.

Hmm costs more than a stay in SJO, and you have to import your own guests . Well if ya want a nice beach vac and no red snapper, or pink snapper.
I guess it would be a place to get a way for a week.

I actually stayed at Cariblue when I was there in December of 2007 and enjoyed it a great deal. Very peaceful and serene.

However, that being said... Last years May was not rainy at all and this one so far has been basically only rain at night which is how about 75% rain comes.
