Hello folks,

I'll be making my first trip to CR next month. I search and could not find information on US cell phone connectivity. Can we use our US cell phones in CR?

Thanks,
Jagman

1800 Band GSM US Phones work as long as your carrier has a roaming agreement with ICE... Far as I know its only ATT - Cingular. You must have international roaming activated which is free but its $2.29 cents per minute, inbound, outbound and locally.

Forget a bout it...

buy a 197 phone card and call the USA. U can check your voice mail and call back with this card. Best calling card in CR. Available on Avenido central down the hill from the DR by Chelles at a guy with a 1/4 inch ply wood table stand on the corner.

Confirmed the ATT-Cingular info. My Verizon will not work. Fortunately my friend has an ATT-Cingular cell. Thanks.

Tripple F and others, don't put all your eggs in the phone card basket. Tried using the 5k colones cards which were good for about 13 minutes of time. Whenever I would hit the * key, my call would be disconnected. Was a real problem checking voice mail back home.

Also, will occasionally have to participate in an 800# conference call while in SJO. The phone cards you mention will not be able to connect through to an 800 number in Norte America.

Be careful in using these cards as the primary source for phone calls north of the border. Does anyone else have a solution to this problem?

If you want to save money calling the states, you could try the voice over IP option at the Internet cafes for about 10 cents a minute.

If you have a lot of money to spend and want a convenient mobile phone that will work anywhere in the world, try a satelite phone from Iridium, Globalstar, ICO Global, Ellipso, Inmarsat or Thuraya.

You can call the US by using a major credit card and ATT (0-800-011-4114). I have never used it but been told is expensive but if you have to make business calls while here guess a dependable good clear connection is worth it

Papa:
I to have had the phone call hang up when using the I.C.E. Cards and trying to access my voice mail as the * does hang up the call. No way around it. My New GSM 1800 band phone does work down there, but added $100.00 in roaming charges to my bill last time down OUCH!!!! Since the Caller Id works I can see who is calling in and end up going over to Zona Blue to check messages with there Voice over IP phone....

JEEZ What an excuse to go visit ZB every couple hours...

I'd like to also like to thank Eddie and the staff for allowing me their Voice OVer IP for a 90 minute conference call 800 # that you alluded to my last trip as without it I was Toast....

I concur Some Internet Cafe's have voice over IP booths but they are always busy and actually working about 50% of the time... Guess I'll have to visit ZB more!
