My girl and I were at San Pedro Mall last night and I got stoped by someone in plain clothes caring a badge asking for my Passport. He was kind of pissed when i presented it to him. I know that carrying it is against my rules. But when I gave it to him..he looked at my pic... thumbed through my pages of CR trips, shruged and gave it back to me.

A lot of people supposedly checking ID's are full of shit... IT's like a bully, 99% of the time when you tell a tico to go Phuck themself, whether they are cop or not, they tend to back down. And if not, there is no penalty for telling a cop that.

Badges are a dime a dozen. You can get them made up for any city, state or country you want. We could have CRT Police badges made if we wanted. The City of San Jose, Costa Rica -- CRT Puzzy Police.

In the words of that infamous gold sombrero wearing thug in th 1948 Humprey Bogat classic Treasure of the Sierra Madre: “'Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges.”

If stopped by a non-uniformed personnel, be polite and respectful but ask to see their identification card. They have them and they are supposed to carry them and present them upon demand.

Sq88 do you think the guy was legit or some scammer with a fake badge trying to shake down a gringo? Was it inside the mall?
Not sure about CR but I can buy badges, the black POLICE t-shirts & ballcaps all day long at the gun show.

I would recommend getting a name and ID number if possible, business card.  If nothing else, make him give you a phone number.  I would try to do all of these before submitting to anything.  I would even try asking him to take to a Mall Security office or uniform officer.

Then report it or check with CR Immigration.  He might be phony they would be interested in, or he might be acting beyond the scope of his duties and they might be interested in that also.

It would not seem normal procedure, even in CR. I guess having your passport messed things up, be interested to know what he would have done if you didnt.

DAMN new VISTA ...keyboard works funny within websites!
