Other than the thrill of the drive thru Mexico for the truly adventuresome, it seems it would just be more viable to ship a cheap car or jeep to Panama and drive it into CR on a tourist VISA. This will give you 90 days automatically and then in 90 days when you drive to Panama and back you get another automatic 90 day extension. After this period, sell it to a local in CR and let them pay the Aduana, marchamo, inspection, etc.
Shipping from Florida via RORO is approx $600. A container will cost you more ($2,000+) if you want to ship a nicer car in a protected environment. There are also many usedcar dealers in other states who regularly ship vehicles to both CR and Panama. One from North Carolina recently told me that he buys older model Toyotas, etc and ships them to Panama where they get painted red and become CR taxis. He said that he used to ship them direct to CR, but found that Panama was a better alternative than dealing with customs in Limon.
If you own nothing in CR, I would drop the US insurance as soon as you get the car in CR. If you get into an accident in CR, just plan to forfeit the vehicle. Any of this is less costly and less risky that buying a car that is already in CR or renting a car in CR.
