Try this: Politely and firmly say "con permiso" (kohn pehr-MEE-soh) as you attempt to pass a throng gathered on the sidewalk. In my experience, the ticos can be careless but are seldom impolite.

If you want someone to continue past you on a sidewalk, smile and say "pasale" (PAH-sah-leh). They'll thank you and pass.
