This comes from an admitted CR utter tyro who presumes no knowledge and I'm not trying to spread FUD. However I've been reading AM Costa Rica daily for 3 years and read Threads back to '04, and this crackdown just "feels" different. To paraphrase a poster in another thread, " In previous crackdowns, the ooMPahs were closed for 3 days, then open for business as usual. This time it's been longer." And looks more permanent. Maybe this is the Perfect Storm (1) powerful interests Tico and Gringo who want to restore and burnish the glory of Barrio Amon, have it be swank boutique hotels, art galleries, etc. for the benefit of Mr. and Mrs. Regional Corporate Manager in town for the day or on vacation (I believe that CAFTA will bring them), (2) the embarrassment of all this activity of what we do so close to downtown, (3) an accomplishment a city or national politician can point to in a re-election bid, (4) we've just gotten too big as a group (not us, I mean "sex tourists" in general), have gotten too much publicity to ignore.
Yes, what we do is legal and where we have done it has been tolerated because it was marginalized in a ghetto of sorts. OTOH, I can see us routed to a Zona Tolerancia on the Mexican model also.
Please, if I'm being a total wack job in this--I can take a slagging. But I've at least stimulated thinking I hope about what our future is here. Again, I'm not trying to spread Fear, Uncertainty or Doubt.
Oh, and about the perfectly legal hotels? Frequent Immigration raids and tough code enforcement might do them in.
So, the questions are the obvious ones--What's going to happen near-term and what's your thoughts on the future?
