Vacation where the dollar is still strong
3 of 7 Costa Rica

Incredibly, Americans now have about a third more buying power in this natural wonderland than they did five years ago - a dollar equals around 500 Costa Rican colones today vs. 360 then.

You can explore beaches good for surfing, then go snorkeling in coral reef-filled bays. Don't miss the rainforests, which teem with wildlife - including rare quetzals with spectacular plumage.

So, does this mean that mongering dollars have 1/3 more buying power?

Costa Rica ranked 3rd, behind Buenes Aries and Bali.

FWIW-YMMV

Your game and ability to negotiate will always be the factor in how far your mongering dollar goes...

Fuzzy Math

aside from a plate of rice and beans most things of any real value are based on the dollar and your cost to vacation here has not been reduced anywhere near a third.

This guy must have learned his economics from the current Bush administration.

Let's see price for a plane ticket was $450 now over $700.

Taxi fare was about $12 now I think it's up to $20. Not real sure on that one I forgot the last time.

Price of a room was $69 now and $98.

Food and drink don't have the numbers but way up.

M. P. prices was $45 for an hour. To be accurate don't have current numbers but I bet they're higher.

Even the price of a fake Rolex has gone up.

The only stable price in town is the asking price at the DR/BM. In 1997 it was $100 and 2008 it's $100. And most of them will still take $70 without question.

One thing that was not taken into consideration in calculating those numbers was inflation and as stated the fact that most pricing for tourist is done in dollars.

Deal breaker for me right there. I'll put up with a lot but I want my fake Rolex to stay at a fixed price. Next thing you know the guys who are kind enough to check your blood pressure are going to charge more for the charity they collect for.
