I have lived in quite a few countries. One thing you have to keep in mind is wages are relative to cost of living. A cheap apartment where I live is around $900. I am told you can get a decent place for around $200 in San Jose.

I will assure you that yes there are Tico apartments that can be rented for $200 and less. BUT most of those, YOU would not even go into the neighborhood much less into the apartment.

While they seem to be offering different view points I believe both those posts are essentially correct.

In most countries, including Costa Rica, wages are somewhat tied to costs of living including housing. The average Tico can and does live in a house that costs $200.00 per month to rent. It does not have cooking facilities other than a 2 or 4 burner propane table top range or a hot plate. There is a small refrigerator which may or may not have a very small freezer area to make ice cubes. There is no hot water in any part of the house except maybe a "suicide shower" in the bathroom.

Yes, most Gringos would not go into those places much less rent an apartment in those areas.

The average Gringo resident has an income far in excess of the average Tico and will live in an middle class area where he will find rentals in the $500.00 to $1000.00 per month range and they will have the amenities that he is accustom to. His Tico neighbors will not be average wage earners but will have incomes more in the range of the Gringos in the area.

San Jose is not much different economically than most U.S. cities. There are areas that cater to the poorest other areas that cater to the richest and other areas that fit the needs of those in between those two extremes.

Very few Gringos venture out of that middle ground when they live here.
