Any of you guys attend the parade Saturday night? I thought it was awesome. It lasted 7:30-12am. Do they have this parade every year? What is it called? Why are there Ch*ldren wearing those devil horns over their heads? Is there anything significant about that?

Every Dec 15th is the Festival of Lights in San Jose. I think it signifies the start of the Christmas season.

going by what was in the storefronts, I thought September 1 was the start of the Christmas season...

The devil is a theme for a lot of the latin countries around this time of year. In Mexico you will see lots of devil masks, and in Guatemala they were selling little blow up devils...

I USED to know why, but I don't remember... All I know is that there are all sorts of devil things being sold at this time of year everywhere...


And yes, it is the festival of lights.

4.5 hours for a parade that I think should only take an hour (based on the numbers of, and the intervals between floats). I enjoyed it the first time I saw it, but Imperial was flowing and we only watched a portion of it. The second time I watched it, I decided that I don't enjoy watching parades, and headed to the Del Rey.

Standing for over 4 hours in a crowd with no beers, and watching yet another marching band go by does not appeal to me, particularly with a nearby parade of chicas walking back and forth from the Del Rey to Key Largo.

However, if you've never seen it before, a few of the floats are interesting, bring a cooler and check it out, or better yet, ask the Del Rey to turn to one of the local stations broadcasting it live, and watch while enjoying a beer and the local talent.

I was there....how about them fireworks....pretty cool - huh?

It really was a buffet of non-pros... Festial de luz?????? (festival of lights). It was great even though the rain was coming down pretty good for a while.

Every trip seems to have something new...I loved it.

they'll be parade of horses , singers and other animals
down second ave all afternoon

brings in some bonita ticas from the campo
not just cute actually some pretties

I was there briefly this year, then I watched the rest from sportsmens, I was there last year. It's one of those things where you go, were glad you went, and say that you will never do that again. which is exactly what I did.

I heard there's some place where they have some sort of amusement park stuff going on with bull fights and stuff during the last week of December?

How does the Horse parade compare with the festival of lights? I've never seen a night parade before so it was unique to me.

Yes the fiesta at Zapote with the bullfights is a must see, and the "Tope" is Dec 26 - the horse parade through downtown. Great time to be in CR IMO, wish I was there! :(

Go to YOUTUBE and do a search on " Costa Rica Tope " and you can see a Tope. You can also do one on "Festival de Luz " and see the Christmas parade. They call those devil horns Gochos or something like that . I would like to know what they mean as well? Have a great holiday season. H.

The Zapote Fair and Bull Ring starts December 25.

Tope (horse parade) will be held on December 26.

Carnival (usually held on December 27) is canceled again this year as it was last year. Carnival has been unable to attract a sponsor, after the San Jose municipality ended their support, and may never be held again.

Zapote Fair A Go; Carnaval Cancelled
Zapote Fair got the go ahead yesterday after receiving the necessary permits by the ecretaría Técnica Ambiental (Setena), allowing the construction of the 'redondel" - bull ring - to be finished in time for the opening day of the fair, December 25.

The contractor said tha the redondel will be finished much earlier, possibly 10 days earlier, after work had completed stopped waiting on the Setena approval.

For a while the Zapote Fair was in jeopardy, worried that redondel would not be finished and the lack of interest by games and rides operators.

The Zapote Fair, an annual tradition that begins on Christmas day, was cancelled last year when the Ministerio de Salud (Health Ministry) found a number of health and safety concerns that could not be rectified in time.

In exchange for the Setena approval, the Municipalidad de San José agreed to invest ¢10 million colones a year for the next four year in environmental projects on the lands surrounding the redondel and the fair grounds.

The commitment includes planting 400 trees during 2008.

The Christmas tradition in San José, that included the Zapote Fair, the Carnaval and the Tope, is in a process of social change.

This year, like last, there will be no Carnaval on the streets of downtown San José, the municipality preferring to offer cultural activities around different parks of the downtown core instead of the traditional parade along Paseo Colón and Avenida Segunda.

Though there will no Caranval again this year, the Tope, the annual horse parade held on December 26 in downtown San José as usual.

It's actually called the "Festival de la Luz" Festival of Lights.

Yeah but 2 years ago Florida and I officially changed it to "Festival de Gatitas" in honor of our insane week in the master suite and Handy's bachelor fiesta. :lol: Ah, the warm memories of Christmas past... :twisted:
