I used a Bank of America debit card yesterday to try and book a INTERBUS ride, ( see other post ) along with tickets to CR via Travelocity ( day before) .

Never had a problem, with many trips booked via Travelocity.
Never had a problem, last trip using Interbus.

I just got a warning from B of A that some where my card was hacked and they stopped a bunch of possible charges . Even called me at home to check up on the charges. Of course it is now a dead card, so it will phuck up my trip a bit, I will still be there on Monday.
Not sure if the leak was via interbus, they seem to have Verisign with SSL
incryption....So Just the facts, as I know them.
YMMV

Luckily I have good credit and am constantly getting offers for credit cards. I have 4 cards with $2000 - $2500 credit limts and I also use those 1st in case any one of them gets compromised. I also have cards with $25K limits and only use those as a last resort.

Same here , just had the cash already on the debit card, so I used it.
On the bright side B of A has already refunded all charges !!!

There was an interesting story last night on "60 Minutes" about credit card fraud. Scary stuff.
http://search.cbsnews.com/?source=cbs&q ... &x=18&y=14

There are only so many things you can do to prevent problems. The two easiest are:
1. Don't let the card out of your sight.
2. Don't sign a 2nd voucher unless you get the first one back.

I always carry two cards (1 Visa, 1 Mastercard) when I travel out of the country. I always call the issuing banks to notify them where I will be traveling to and for how long. Don't forget to alert your bank about your ATM card, too.

Wachovia put a hold on mine one time in San Diego but I never had a problem in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica or Colombia.
Go figure.

My AMEX stays HOME!

Not very clear.

HOW did you book the Interbus ride ? Did you go to them and THEY used your card or did you use the Internet to enter your card number ? Sounds like the latter ("Verisign with SSL)

I'm sure Travelocity is a secure site so that's probably a bit less likely as a "culprit".

How did you get the BoA "warning" ? Via e-mail ? How soon after the "leak" did yo get the BoA warning ? How do you know they called you at home ? Didn't they offer you a "solution" when you told them you were still in San Jose ? Presumably you need the card or at least they should have thought you might.

Sorry but not much useful info...... (but thanks for the (offer of the) help)

this could be simply because you used your card outside of the US. I use my bank of america card alot for online orders, and EVERY time I order absinthe from Alandia in Denmark, BOA sends me an email notice that my card has been dibabled because of fraud and I have to call a phone number and they go through my recent charges which I confirm and all is good again. while I am going through the prompts of the automated phone service, there is always an option to let them know when I am going out of the country on vacation or business and may be using my card.

Bof A is good for security. I used my debit card for the hotel last time I was in Jakarta. The hotel staff must have lifted the number as when I got home there were over 10k in charges, mostly from various banks and services in France. I called Bof A and in two days they reversed all 10k of the charges. Even the actual hotel charges, which were $300 over what I signed for. No one ever contested the hotel charge reversal, either. So for all the stress I got my money back and 4 free hotel nights. Do be careful using the card. Is there no way you could just pay cash on arrival for the bus?

Vegas,

Interbus wants your card number ahead of time as security in case you're a NO SHOW.

Every time I go to Central America o SA, I call BOFA to let them know the country to which I'm travelling, after having my card shut off once. That seems to do the trick. I check daily via online banking to see if there are weird charges also.

Also, keep your antivirus and anti-spyware software up to date. I have had several friends whose accounts were hacked because they had a trojan installed on their PC.

when I travel I use a pre-paid Visa travel card by Greendot . If the card is stolen ,hacked or lost they gaurentee the funds to you in 24 hours anywhere in the world .

You can Re-load the card at Riteaid or CVS where you bought it and check online to see activity .Maximum $2500.00 and can be used in ATM anywhere . What I Also do is carry other cards ,Money Belt cash and I leave All of my debit card and bank account numbers,Bank phone numbers in an email of Hotmail so I can just go online if stolen and have the info to report it .

When i went to CR the ATM in the Los suenos Marriot deducted $300 and never gave me the money .I recieved Via my pre-paid debit card 4 months later . Also The DELREY held 2 nights stay on my card for 4 months untill My card company released it .I have to add neither the DR or Marriot was any help .

Why am I telling you this? I have no F-in Idea Im going to sleep . JG

Well, I think it's very likely that someone at Interbus is the culprit. I got a call at home last night from Bank of Montreal's security department questioning some charges made at pokerstars.com. I do not gamble, online or off, rarely use my credit card online. They have reversed the charges, and are sending me a new card by courier so I'll have it when I leave Friday.

Oh, how do I know it's Interbus? I booked them online using...my credit card. I've never used them before, & doubt I will again after this.
