Yes today is the REAL Veteran's Day!

Thank you to those of you that served and sacrifced for so many.

This weekend I have had the pleasure to witness several random acts of kindness at the new joint in here in DFW. With the location less than two minutes from the airport entrance, we see many soldiers dining before boarding planes to and fro.

Friday afternoon at lunch 8 soldiers from the Army dined with us, I was called over to a table and given a credit card and told not to say a word but just pick up the tab and not let the soldiers know who bought there lunch.

Last night I booked a group of 27 Marines in a private dining room, getting ready to ship out today. They arived with spouses, girlfriends and Ch*ldren. They had a great time (glad I cut the DFW CRT meeting short and got back) once again I am told a gentleman in the bar area wants to see me. I introduce myself, and he informs me wants to pick up the tab. It was in the $1500 area at the time and he said no problem. Whatever it the final tab is put it on my card.

Today at lunch 25 Harley riders pull up for a bowl of red and we get talking about the morning ride, they said they just got back from DFW to welcome the troops back. And finally tonite, another soldier, from the Navy is celebrating with family and friends as he ships out. I wished I had bought some damn cookies to ship back with him :x But I mentioned many of my friends on a website wish you a safe return and appreciate all you have done.

Happy Veteran's Day to my fellow CRT brothers and as always the first cold beverage is on me should our trails cross.

yes, a salute to all the vets.

as an aside, does anyone know if there is a veteran's day in CR?

I used to enjoy springing for a bite to eat with a CR pensioner (i believe his pension was about 100 dollars a month) at one of the small cafes near calle 6 and avenida 5.

he told me he had participated in some sort of internal, civil action back in the 1940's ? in CR.

perhaps some of our resident or veteran members know more about the history and status of any CR veterans.

I would like to second Hola B's thoughts. I have several close friends whose Ch*ldren are serving in Iraq and I appreciate their efforts on my behalf. The neighborhood bar I frequent back home has a real mix of income levels, but also three generartions of patronage form the neighborhood. We had a friend's son come back disabled and in a chair. At 20 with no college and a family with limited means. A group from the bar did the following:

Paid for him to learn CAD/CAM in a two year technical program
One member employed him as a drafstmen/designer
Provided him a downpayment on a modest home. He designed the house and three contractors from the neighborhood built it at costs. Another two businessmen co-signed the very modest mortgage.

All involved asked that it not be sent to the papers or publicized in any way. It remined me that I lived in a real neighborhood and not just a collection of houses.

The day he moved in with help from twent or so, I saw some of the toughest men in South Richmond cry for 10 minutes.

I am never going home

In the late forties (48-49) there was a civil uprising in Costa Rica, led by Jose "Pepe" Figueres, against the government of Rafael Calderon. After about a month of fighting Calderon was overthrown. Figueres was declared President and Calderon was exiled. Later in 1949 Figueres disbanded the army and Costa Rica has been peaceful ever since.
