Of course the price will go up if the TLC passes. CR has one of the cheapest cell phone rates in the world. 8$ per month with a 25$ deposit. Doesn't take a genius to figure that out. Not speculation either.

In Ecuador the chip costs 6$ and the prepaid card is 31 cents a minute if you call the same cell phone companies phone. 51 cents a minute if you call the other company. about the same in Peru also. Why would CR be any different? The way the chicas yak on the phone here they will have to take out a loan to pay the bill or have 3 gringos sending them money.

The rental option is good but expensive. If it is worth it for you on vacation then go for it.

Would someone PLEASE explain to me why my girlfriend and I are getting SCREWED with our cell phones!!!!   :( :x  I pay the bill for the 2 phones and I know what I pay so don't tell me I am wrong. AND THIS MONTH ( actually bill was for August and I was in the states for 3 weeks in Aug.) the bill was c80,000 (about $160)

So where are these $8 a month phones everyone keeps talking about????
And what is the 25c deposit? We bought the phones, you cannot get a fone from ICE, and we paid $12.50 per fone for connection

You can rent a cell phone from www.cellulartelephonerentals.com for $10/day, unlimited calls within CR and free incoming international calls. To call US, it's $1.25/min, but you can buy a prepaid phone card and pay $0.40/min.

For rentals (local calls), I have used Rico at CTR.com (above link) half dozen or more times whithout incident, $ 9.95 per day, just watch him to make sure he refunds your deposit, this was an issue for a wingman.

I use my skype a/c for calls to the US, another option is a prepaid 3,000 colone card which usually gives you about 30 minutes (roughly)to the US.

Cell phone basic service is 3640 colones a month which is exactly $7.00 using their (ICE) current exchange rate. I know this to be accurate because that is what my bill is month in and month out. I carry a cell phone for use only in an emergency, my car breaks down, in an accident, etc. so my use is very minimal and never exceeds the free 60 minutes for the month. Cell phone use can get very expensive (as BangBang is finding out) if you use the phone excessively as chicas are want to do. When you pay your bill the receipt will show how many minutes over your free 60 minutes you used.

You should not have had to pay a connection charge. You should have been charged a 12,000 colones deposit which is returnable if you cancel service and all your bills are paid. Off course when I gave them the 12000 colones the exchange rate was about 425 and it is now 520 but they still will only give me 12000 colones back

Your girl never stopped yakking when you were in the states. These chicas can run up the bill real quick.

I use mine alot and usually pay 10-12 mil per month.
