Has anyone every used bug repellent in CR? On my first trip I brought a small bottle of 100% deet repellent but saw hardly any bugs - neither in SJ nor Quepos. This trip I brought it thinking there would be bugs in the rainy season but I see no difference in SJ. My brother just left Tambor and reported also no bugs...?

Central Valley has very few mosquitos. I never shut my windows with no screens year round. One of my favorite things about CR.

You need the repellent in areas that have been having the dengue fever problems, Caribbean side, northwest Costa Rica, and to a lesser extent on the Pacific side.

Pretty much should have the repellent everywhere outside of San Jose. There is risk (small or big) of mosquitos in all of Costa Rica.

Eat lots of garlic. Keeps the bugs away. And the people....

The only time I needed anything was when I went to the North Pacific to Samara and Playa Coco, I never needed anything in San Jose..

You can buy Off in supermarkets, not prohibitively expensive. DEET works no question, I also used to bring down those little bottles of 100% and never used much as I hate to spray that shit on my skin. I quit bringing it.. The Off product in the stores is anywhere from ~ 35% DEET and the aerosol is easy to apply.

In over a year spent in Costa Rica over the last four, I have not seen all that many mosquitoes, and I have been around country a bit. But this last April in my apt. in Barrio Escalante (last place I would expect) phuckers drove me batshit for a couple weeks – zzzzzzzzz all night long and bit hell out of me. Not a plague or anything, an old tire full of water can breed hundreds of the bitches. Probably something like that in the neighborhood at that time. In the central valley Usually they are not the species that will infect you with Dengue…I am cautious though - no mosquito bite can be anything good though the majority are harmless.

In CR they also sell a product in the stores that I never see in the States: A Glade-like plug in thing that you put in a chip of pesticide product every night.. Supposedly the vapor keeps the mosquitoes away. In my experience they are pretty worthless. A net over your bed in a bug prone area gives you a great night sleep. OFF or DEET sprayed liberally around headboard of the bed and covers also. Hotel dwellers on the third floor and above in SJO will probably never see too many skeeters.

The only reason I went on about this is because one of my jobs is mosquito abatement in the US. You were worried about catching shit from hookers due to your hobby? Hahaha mosquitoes have killed more people in the history of mankind than All of all other sources put together.

Cygnus you old Coot…

I read this before you deleted it – why? Those lizards are ‘gheckos’ our bestest friends they clean all the bugs outta the house.

See you when the snow flies in Seattle…
