ID thanks for the info on the dress. I was planning on bringing at least a coat and tie. I am going to opening night. I am checking with a local tica about the exact dress code. I want to dress the same as they do...

Spoke with a tica who said a coat was good but forget the tie. Most women will either wear skirts or slacks..no jeans....

Yo Kryan:

I've enjoyed the National Theater concerts and especially some private parties there. As stated previously, slacks and shirt are fine unless it is a private coat and tie event. For better acoustics do not take the balcony seats.

The side room use to serve food and drink but I have not been to a regular concert in over four years so I'm not sure if they do anymore.

It is indeed a nice building and a refreshing way to get out of the gulch atmosphere. As stated, the price is very reasonable compared to civic theater in the U.S. I hope you enjoy the evening.

Livincr,

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, I will not return to Costa Rica until January. I had promised my special young lady friend  ......that I would take her to see a performance there.

There's a National Theater in SJ? It must not be close to the DR.

The tickets are average price. I did pick up 2 front row tickets to Falstaff on openning night for 50k. The webiste was easy to use and I was able to charge the tickets.

Some time back I happened upon a performance of the Costa Rican symphony orchestra at the Teatro National. Drillem and I were having breakfast at the Hotel Grand Costa Rica, and we walked into the theater. We asked if there were still tickets available and we bought a couple and had great seats for not much money. We really enjoyed it.

Xman, the Teatro Nacional is in the Plaza de la Cultura right on Avienda Central a few blocks from the DR. :D

YO Culture chaps:

What made me finally refrain from attending the National Theater is that they refused to consider my suggestins for entertainment. Back in 03 I tried to encourage the management to broaden their format with the events such as:

Tica mud wrestling
Cage fights
Wrestlemania
Tractor pulls & bigfoot trucks
pole dancing contests
NTM, Charlie Daniels concerts.

Shit, it just fell on death ears. A little real man stuff would have perked up the place. There is only so much of fiddles, bass, bugles and drums orchestra a farm boy can take. Thank goodness I didn't suggest farm sex musicals.......those light in the loafers girly men on their board of directors would have had a cow.

Old Circus knows his entertainment.

Check out Teatro Melico Salazar for a less "high brow" night out.

They feature more popular events like Mal Pais, Editus, Canto America, Ray Tico, Bernardo Casada, Marta Fonseca etc. It's also a smaller venue for touring Interanational groups etc. Very nice theater, will probably be more enjoyable for your favorite working girl.

It's about 3 -4 blocks west of Teatro Nacional on Ave 2.
