I have been in Peru for the last 6 weeks and I am certain when I left CR the colon was 520- 525. I checked yesterday at the colon was 514-518.

The colon seems to be gaining a little against the ever weakening dollar. The United States idiotic fiscal policies will make the euro the universal currency in short order. Bad news for dollar holders worldwide.

It used to be that everyday we got more colones for the dollar, a good hedge against inflation. It more or less matched inflation every year. It looks like those days are over.

Costa Rica has a new Colon exchange rate which is variable now. The rates are from 514 to 532, but all the banks are only giving 514 for small exchanges. If you're a large company, you can still get 532, but that is fixed until they move the bar in January.

It would be around 532 to the dollar under the old system now. I went to the bank today and it was 513- 518 buy and sell. How and where can you get 532 for a dollar?

You have to have an account in a CR bank and process more than $100k per month in transactions to get the higher rates.

Added : There are multiple rates up to the max, as your bank, the increments may be in $10k per month or so....
