The annual parades Tope and Carnival will be held this year but under different names and sponsored by private companies rather than the Municipality of San Jose.
Tope (December 26) now named, "El dÃa del caballista" ("The day of the horseman")
Carnival (December 27) now named "El pasacalle festivo" ("The festive street band")
From this mornings Inside Costa Rica.
Yes, There Will Be Tope & Carnaval This Year, But With a New Name
Following last weeks bad news of the cancellation of the Zapote annual fair, the traditional "tope" and "carnaval" were also in jeopardy.
However, the Concejo Municipal de San José (Municipal Council) voted last night to allow the traditional parades along Paseo Colon and Avenida Segunda.
However, the events on December 26 and 27 will be renamed to "El dÃa del caballista" and "El pasacalle festivo" instead of the "Tope" and "Carnaval".
No reason was given for the name change, other than the events will be in the hands of private enterprise rather than be organized and run by the municipality. The Consejo said that the events were too costly and the revenue left them with a loss, for the decision to hand out the events on a concession.
With the decision also ends the function of the Comisión de Festejos Populares which has no more function now that the traditional events of Zapote, Tope and Carnaval will not take place as in the past years.
