Hi all :

I was thinking about spending the month of January in Costa Rica learning Spanish. I tried to do a search, but you get 4,000 hits on anywhere someone used the word "Spanish", which is basically all
the damn posts !!

Anyway, this would be my third trip. I met a few guys on my last trips, but never got around to asking this question. Anyone know of a good one ? San Jose area preferred.

That Yahoo search is doing better than Dano did, but it is still nearly 2000 results. As in most things relating to CR, you really don't have to go far from CRT to get the information. You just have to learn how to use the search engine here properly. Did Dano ever think of trying a search of the words "Spanish" AND "Schools" (remember to check "Search for all terms")? That results in a much more manageable 39 results.

Oh yeah, and my own personal recommendation would be CRLA (where I went). It is located near the new Hotel M, which, though very convenient to CRLA, spending a full month at a regular hotel would probably break the bank. You'll also find info in those threads on good places to stay nearby for an extended one month visit.

I tried a few different way using quotes and such, but wasn't having much luck. I did do a google search and came up with one that's up in the Northwest. It's $1,300 for a month, right near a beach (can't think of which at the moment) You go to school 5 days a week from 8 to 12. They bunk you with a host family that lives close by.

It's an option. I have some cards from a few people I met at the Presedente last time that had cheap places by the week. Then I would find a decent school right in SJ. I thought about doing that to avoid a whole month in a hotel as I plan on continuing on to Panama then Colombia for a few weeks.

There is Wayra in Playa Tamarindo, CPI in Playa Flamingo and Intercultura in Playa Samara. But none of those are near anything approaching the quality of P4P that you'll find in SJ. And in SJ there are at least a couple of dozen schools to choose from, not to mention at least a down more in the nearby towns of Alajuela, Heredia etc.

I also recommend (highly) CRLA - very professional school and their home stay is excellent and very affordable - about $350 per week includes school, room, breakfast, dinner, laundry. I guess one need to determine the goals of a trip - learning Spanish ... then CRLA and a home stay is perfect. Mongering plus a little Spanish .. more difficult IMHO and more costly.

I did CRLA with home stay ... class in the morning (9-12), lunch at Hotel M followed by a private CRLA class in the afternoon (1-2). Then I went to Idem, ZB or another diversion to practice what I had learned and then back to the host family by about 5PM.

I can not say enough about CRLA and their home stay program. I plan to do it again and soon.

I've done CRLA also (twice, liked it so much I went back). There are many posts on this subject, do a search. One site you may be interested is:

This will list all the known schools per country, lots of them in CR.

Another perk of CRLA is that they hire young chicas from the University to teach (who major in languages), real pink-collar situation. I would have like have done by my profesoras. I was hot for teacher! They also young and not jaded in their teaching styles.
